77-year-old man assaulted in retirement home

A 77-year-old man has been left with "significant" injuries after being attacked at a retirement home in Staffordshire.

Armed police were called to Glouster Grange in Newcastle-under-Lyme just before 5am this morning, after reports of a man smashing his way into the home with a weapon.

Police found an elderly male who had been badly assaulted and had received head injuries. The 77-year-old victim was taken to hospital where his injuries are believed to be significant, but not life threatening.

After searching the retirement home complex, police found a 28-year-old male, who was arrested and taken into police custody.

Police say they are not looking for any other individuals in relation to this incident.

Officers will also be increasing patrols in the area to reassure residents.
