A six-year-old boy has died after a house fire in Ilkeston.

Emergency services were called to Shaw Street West just after 10.30pm yesterday (Fri) where they found the boy with serious injuries. He was taken to the QMC but he was pronounced dead shortly after arriving.

It's not yet known what caused the blaze, and an investigation is now underway.

A spokesperson for Derbyshire Police said: "We were called by Derbyshire Fire and Rescue to reports of a fire at house in Shaw Street West, Ilkeston, at 10.40pm last night.

"Firefighters entered the property and found a six-year-old boy with serious injuries. The boy was taken to QMC by ambulance, however, he was pronounced dead a short time later.

"Enquiries as to the cause of the fire are ongoing and a joint police and fire investigation will take place today."

Three crews were sent to the blaze. Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service added: "Firefighters using breathing apparatus and hose real jets entered the property and rescued a six-year-old boy, performing CPR until the arrival of paramedics. The boy was taken to the Queen’s Medical Centre but tragically pronounced deceased.

"Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service would like to extend its thoughts and sympathy to the family and friends of the boy at this distressing time. A joint police and fire investigation into the cause of the fire is due to commence today."
