A man in his 50s has been shot by police following a report of an individual with a handgun in Bromsgrove.

The incident happened at around 1.44am this morning (Sunday November 4) in Birmingham Road.

Armed police attended after police received a report of a man with a handgun in School Lane.

The man, believed to be aged 53, was taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital where he underwent surgery.

West Mercia police have said his injuries are not thought to be life-threatening and confirmed no one else was injured.

The incident has been referred to the Independent Office of Police Conduct (IOPC).

West Mercia Police Assistant Chief Constable Martin Evans said:

"It is standard procedure that incidents of this nature are referred to the Independent Office of Police Conduct and we will now work with them as they carry out their enquiries."
