Carer caught stealing cash from woman with dementia

A carer has been caught stealing £130 in cash from an elderly woman with dementia, after a family set up hidden cameras.

Footage captured Graziella Avetti searching through bags in a bedroom, before hiding cash in her bra.

The family became suspicious after £20,000 worth of jewellery belonging to the woman in her 90s was stolen from the house in Old Melton Road in Norman-on-the-Wolds in Nottinghamshire in October 2017.

After checking the camera, there was clear evidence of Avetti taking cash.

The police were then called and 61-year-old Avetti was arrested.

She has been sentenced to a 12-month community order, 160 hours of unpaid work and ordered to pay £750 prosecution costs and an £85 victim surcharge.

No one has been arrested or charged in connection with the jewellery theft.

Avetti was trusted to care for an elderly woman and had stayed overnight at the house on a number of occasions. But the family was horrified to find crystal clear video footage showing she had stolen cash when only the elderly mother was at home with her - and she clearly thought no one would be looking. After the daughter of the woman she was caring for came home the next morning she was calmly drinking coffee in the kitchen and exchanged pleasantries. Thankfully the family's hidden camera caught her red-handed and she has now had to face up to what she had done.
