Severn Trent apologise as burst water main causes Birmingham commuter chaos

  • Commuters have been forced to improvise and build makeshift bridges to cross one of the busiest roads into Birmingham city centre this morning
  • Bottled water has been hand delivered to around 500 "most vulnerable" customers
  • Severn Trent say "we would like to apologise to everyone who’s had problems getting ready for work or school this morning"

A burst water main in the early hours of this morning has closed Hagley Road into Birmingham.

Severn Trent say it is a 20 inch pipe and "won't be an easy repair" - meaning parts of the road will be closed all day.

Our teams are continuing to work hard on the repair under difficult conditions in order to get everything back to normal as quickly as possible.

We can assure all customers our top priority is to get everyone back on supply as quickly as we can.

The process will take time, and we’d like to apologise to everyone who’s had problems getting ready for work or school this morning.>

A new pipe has arrived at the site and will replace the broken section.
