Winter well-being: a forest nursery where children spend time outdoors

These children spend the day climbing trees, making dens and disco dancing.

At this nursery in Ibstock in Leicestershire their philosophy is that children who spend time outdoors doing activities, are fitter, healthier and more resilient.

The Forest school model originated in Scandinavia, and is gaining in popularity here.

Children are encouraged to be at one with nature - and that even means lighting fires.

They are using the clay and cooking on the fire, building dens is always a favourite and looking for frogs, they get to use tools every week, they help to build the fire and climbing trees is a favourite

– Kelly Burchell, Early Years Practitioner

Being outdoors and being in nature and doing meaningful things is so beneficial for children, it grows our brains, it grows our bodies, it grows our spirits, it has such a lot to offer and we felt that was really important for our son"

– Sarah-Jane Knight, Parent
