Bill for woman who fell ill in Mexico reaches $360,000

A woman who has been in an induced coma in a Mexican hospital has been flown back to the UK.

Maxine Howell fell ill whilst on a holiday to celebrate her 50th birthday. After three weeks in hospital there, she was flown back to Sandwell Hospital over the weekend. Her family have been told by a doctor on the flight that she was lucky to have survived the journey. She is now in a critical but stable condition in ICU.

Her family have been told that the flight cost $93,000, and that her other medical bills are $295,000. Only 10.25% of this will be covered by Maxine's insurance, after she failed to declare that she had been prescribed an inhaler in the last few years.

Her family says they have no idea how they will be able to afford to pay back the moneyand have turned to a Crowdfunding page to raise some money.

We are in constant communication with the family of Mrs Howell, which has included arranging for her repatriation to the UK over the weekend. Our primary concern is getting Mrs Howell the care she needs, and doing all we can to help and support her family, during this difficult time.'
