Farmers urged to open up about their mental health

  • One agricultural worker takes their own life each week in the UK, ITV News Central has been told by the charity Farm Safety Foundation.

Jonathan Glen, a farmer from Shropshire, says he became depressed while managing a herd on an isolated farm.

He is now talking about the struggle he had with depression and is calling for others in the agricultural industry to open up about their problems.

I'd lost the love that I had for dairy farming.

I used to struggle to get up in the mornings. I used to struggle to do what I used to love doing.

It culminated in my realising that I was suffering from depression

During times of crisis, such as BSE or the Foot and Mouth Outbreak, the figure increases.

The charity has launched a campaign to raise awareness of mental health problems among farmers.
