Parents have been left shocked after nine-year-old boy from Stoke-on-Trent was caught taking a knife to school.

The child took the weapon to St Paul's C of E Primary School, in Goms Mill, and showed it to his friends.

It has been reported that the boy has been suspended for three weeks, but parents are calling for him to be permanently excluded.

A letter to year 5 parents at the school said:

A child has brought a knife into school and shown it to a couple of other children within year five.

The child has received a severe consequence for this and I have a zero-tolerance policy regarding matters like this.

All of the children had only just recently received a workshop from the police about the seriousness of knife crime which makes this all the more upsetting."

The headteacher would not specify the punishment. She said: "The situation was dealt with under the guidance of our school policies.

"All appropriate actions were followed up and everything was done in line with school policy."

Joshua Lovatt, whose daughter is in reception, said: "It's a joke that we haven't been informed. The child should be kicked out of the school for good."

Carl Lane, who has children at the school in reception, year four and year six, said: "This is disgusting. The child should be excluded and I'm disgusted that we weren't informed."

But Kaylea Kelsall - who has a daughter in year six - is sure the school will take appropriate action against the pupil. She said: "It is concerning that a child so young would do something like that, but I have faith in the school to deal with it well."
