The threat of a fine isn't stopping parents in the Midlands taking their children out of school during term time.
Figures from the Department of Education, analysed by ITV News Central, reveal penalty notices for parents in the West Midlands increased by 200% last year, compared to the previous year.
Last year penalty fines for parents there rose from 7,500 to over 23,000.
In the East Midlands the figure increased by 70%.
Almost 26,000 penalties were issued last year compared to more than 15,000 the previous year.
Most of those were because families went on unauthorised holidays.
Families say going away during the school holidays is too expensive.
But some schools say time out of the class impacts on learning.
