Conservatives lose control of Peterborough Council

In a part of the world which voted decisively to leave the EU in 2016, the main winners overnight were the explicitly remain-supporting parties. Both the Liberal Democrats and the Green Party picked up seats from the Conservatives who lost control of the council.

Peterborough has flipped between a Conservative majority and No Overall Control for the last five years, but in 2017 the town returned a Labour MP to Parliament.

Fiona Onasanya has since been recalled after a speeding offence, and there will be a parliamentary by-election next month. Although local Conservatives are pains to point out that many of their losses came in areas which fall outside of the parliamentary constituency.
