A police officer is in hospital with serious injuries after being involved in a crash with a car in Birmingham that was being pursued by his police colleagues after it failed to stop for them.

Traffic officers tried to stop a Range Rover Discovery that was being driven erratically on Wood End Road in Erdington at around 4:10am.

After a brief pursuit, the car crashed with a passing police car that was not involved in the pursuit.

The officer has pelvic, leg and shoulder injuries and is in a serious but stable condition in hospital.

A 37-year-old-man has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and driving whilst unfit through drink or drugs.

An investigation is underway to establish the circumstances of what took place this morning and I would urge anyone who witnessed the collision to get in touch.

Support is being pro-actively offered to those who attended the scene and colleagues of the officer.
