Drone halted flights and shut down East Midlands Airport

A drone halted flights and temporarily shut down East Midlands Airport this morning.

The airport was closed between 8.00am and 9.00am after a drone was spotted.

Leicestershire Police confirmed they are currently working to identify the person responsible.

East Midlands Airport told ITV Central:

“A drone sighting at EMA this morning is currently subject to an ongoing Leicestershire Police investigation. The airport closed briefly between the hours of 8am and 9am. Impact on flights has been minimal.”

A Leicestershire Police spokeswoman said:

Following a drone sighting at East Midlands Airport this morning officers are currently working to identify the person responsible.

"We are working closely with staff at the airport and the airport was closed briefly for safety reasons but the impact on flights has been kept to a minimum."
