Karen Carney announces retirement from football

England midfielder Karen Carney has announced her retirement from football.

Carney, from Solihull, started her career with Birmingham City in 2001, before going on to play for Arsenal, Chicago Red Stars and Chelsea, as well as the national team.

Overall, she won 143 caps and scored 32 goals, having made a goalscoring debut in a 4-1 defeat of Italy in 2005.

Carney will sign off after the Lionesses conclude their 2019 FIFA World Cup campaign against Sweden in Nice on Saturday.
