At least five injured after car crashes into tram in Wolverhampton

A tram has collided with a car in Wolverhampton this morning (Monday 19 August), injuring at least five people.

It happened at the Bilston Street roundabout.

Three crews from West Midlands Fire Service responded to the incident.

Firefighters used cutting equipment to free a woman from the car.

The British Transport Police said four tram passengers were treated at the scene for minor injuries, and the driver of the car was taken to hospital.

Long delays are expected in the area.

A spokesperson for British Transport Police said they were called "to Bilston Road, Wolverhampton, following a report of a collision between a tram and a car causing a minor derailment.

"Four passengers were treated at the scene for minor injuries and shock.

"The driver of the car was taken to hospital with a minor arm injury and whiplash. Enquiries into the incident are ongoing."

“We were called at 8.21am to Bilston Street following reports of a collision between a car and tram.

“The tram has been derailed and the overhead lines have been switched off as the crews work at the scene. The car has also overturned following the collision.

“One woman, the driver, was trapped in the car.

"The tram driver and five patients are also being treated by crews from West Midlands Ambulance Service.”
