Man convicted of raping woman as she walked to work

A man has been convicted of raping a woman in Birmingham city centre as she walked to work.

Farirai Shereni, 25, attacked the woman as she made her way around 4.30am on 6 November 2018.

CCTV footage played in court showed Shereni approaching the victim then forcing her towards an underpass on Bull Street.

Shereni could be seen 'grabbing and manhandling' the victim, as she tried to escape.

Shereni denied attacking the victim, but jurors at Birmingham Crown Court found him guilty of two counts of rape yesterday, and one of sexually assaulting a female.

Detective Constable Lyndsey Davenport, who investigated the case, said:

"Shereni tried to discredit the victim’s account, but evidence uncovered as part of the investigation clearly shows that his account was completely untrue.

"The woman showed great courage in coming forward and without her bravery and support we may not have been able to bring him to justice.

"He now faces many years behind bars and I hope this will provide some sense of justice to his victim and her loved ones."

Shereni is due to be sentenced at Birmingham Crown Court on 17 October.
