Bin workers in Sandwell one step closer to holding strikes

The GMB Union, which represents bin collectors in Sandwell, has told ITV News Central that they will progress with industrial action.

Earlier today the GMB and Unison unions met with Serco, the company which manages collections in the borough, to discuss areas of concern including changes to some routes.

The GMB Union has told ITV News Central that those talks have broken down, and they are now considering issuing a notice of industrial action tomorrow (9th January).

The GMB union has already balloted their members and they have voted in favour of working to rule.

The dispute concerns claims that private outsourcing company Serco urged workers to ignore the company’s own safety rules.

Initial talks with the company failed to reach a resolution, which then led to mediation talks through ACAS - with no resolution.

We contacted Serco after tonight's meeting - they said they were unable to comment.
