Bruce George, the former MP for Walsall South has died aged 77.
Mr George passed away in his care home in London yesterday evening (24 February) after suffering from a long illness.
He has been described by his wife as a "conscientious and assiduous constituency MP who cherished his adopted town of Walsall".
The former MP won his Midlands seat in February 1974 and kept hold of it for eight elections, over 36 years.
Mr George, who retired in 2010, dedicated much of his life to human rights and was elected President of the Organisation for Security Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) Parliamentary Assembly in 2002.
He participated in missions overseas in elections in countries such as Georgia, from which he was awarded the Medal of Honour by the President in recognition of his contribution to democratisation.
His wife also added how her husband was a member of the defence select committee from 1979 and a long-serving delegate to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly.
