100 cards have been sent out by members of the public to celebrate World War II veteran Kenneth Holmes' birthday.

An appeal was sent out to all local schools and pupils to make a card for Ken to help him celebrate his 100th birthday in isolation.

The appeal had a fantastic response with cards being sent from far and wide to commemorate his life.

He even got a special surprise card from Her Majesty the Queen!

Today (15th May) a party was thrown for him attended by his local police force and friends who united together, at a distance, to sing happy birthday.

“The people of Ilkeston are amazing! I’m so proud of all the beautiful cards, that have helped make Ken’s 100th birthday such a special day. It’s fair to say that Ken was a little overwhelmed by all the kindness shown to him today - all the cards meant so much. A special thank you to all the wonderful carers - at Victoria Park Care Home - and all other care homes - you all do such a wonderful job.”
