Following the smash, the passenger in the car was trapped and had to be freed by fire crews, an operation which a spokesperson for the fire service described as 'complicated'.

Four people were taken to hospital, whilst the slip road was closed by police for almost six hours.

Leicestershire Police, Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service and East Midlands Ambulance Service all attended the collision.

 The fire service spokesperson said:

"The incident involved two heavy goods vehicles and a car.

"It was a complicated extraction but the casualty was freed and taken to hospital with only minor injuries."
