A Leamington Spa-based film producer who works at Birmingham City University, is up for an Oscar at Sunday night's Academy Awards ceremony in Hollywood.

Oscar-nominated film producer Lee Thomas, who tutors MA students at Birmingham City University, missed out on an Academy Award in the Best Short Film Live Action category last night. His film "The Voorman Problem" lost out to Danish fantasy "Helium", a film about a terminally ill boy.

The prestigious award ceremony took place in Los Angeles yesterday.

Oscar hopes for film backed by Birmingham tutor

The film has already won awards including Best Live Action Short Film at the St. Louis International Film Festival. It was also nominated in the same category at the BAFTA's.

Birmingham film producer in Oscar race

A film producer who tutors at Birmingham City University, is up for an Oscar on Sunday night at the biggest and most glamorous night in Hollywood's calendar.

Lee Thomas from Leamington Spa, was part of the producing team behind the short film "The Voorman Problem". It stars Martin Freeman, best-known for his work in Peter Jackson's "The Hobbit" trilogy, and Tom Hollander, currently on the big-screen in "The Invisible Woman", about Charles Dickens.
