The 73-year-old woman who survived a gas explosion at her home in Wolverhampton as released a statement detailing her recovery.

Wendy Ayoub was freed from the rubble of her bungalow after it exploded yesterday morning. She had only cuts and bruises and a broken ankle.

She's being treated at New Cross Hospital, and thanks those that helped free her from the wreckage of her home.

I am comfortable and recovering well. I would like to express my sincere thanks to the emergency services and hospital staff who have helped me.

A woman in her 70s has survived a gas explosion that flattened her home in Wolverhampton this morning.

She was buried under the rubble for nearly 2 hours before being rescued - seemingly saved by her washing machine.

The explosion was described by neighbours like 'a bomb going off'. Michael Sibert reports.

A woman who survived an explosion at her home with only minor injuries wa reportedly saved by her washing machine.

The pensioner's washing machine and internal wall of her home held back additional rubble and timber to help her survive, according to the West Midlands Hazardous Area Response Team.

She was pulled from the rubble almost two hours after the explosion happened.

Woman 'not seriously hurt' after house collapses

West Midlands Ambulance Service have confirmed that an elderly woman who was rescued following a house explosion is 'not seriously hurt'.

She is being taken to New Cross Hospital for further assessment.

A woman has been freed from the rubble of a Wolverhampton house after an explosion early this morning.

Crews were called to the scene following the explosion which happened just after 8am this morning.

Earlier police reports suggested that a woman had been taken to hospital, but it then emerged that she was still stuck under the rubble.

A couple of people in passing cars treated for minor injuries such as shock.
