Bartley Green stabbing: Knife crime 'epidemic' in city

A police cordon is in place Credit: @Snappersk

A councillor has said there appears to be a knife crime epidemic in Birmingham.

The comment comes after a 22-year-old man was fatally stabbed in Bartley Green last night (3 July).

A number of residents around Lye Road are unable to leave their homes because of a cordon, meaning many children could miss school today.

In a statement, Birmingham City Councillor Des Flood (Bartley Green) said:

I am shocked that another major incident has come to the streets of Bartley Green, especially so soon after the shootings a number of months ago.

Local residents are extremely disturbed an upset about this recent murder.

I understand that a number of school children cannot leave their homes because of the police crime scene, and will there for probably miss school today as a result.

It is terrible that another family have been hit with this news and now have to deal with this terrible and shocking loss of life, nothing warrants the loss of a life.

Knife crime appears to be an epidemic in the South of our City.

The police appear to be between a rock and a hard place with regards to neighbourhood policing, in trying to balance the priorities of the bigger picture across the city and local needs - but they mustn't forget the importance of local neighbourhood policing and resourcing.
