Coventry City Council's leader has joked that his authority should fly a flag bearing a "happy smiling face" to mark Baroness Thatcher's funeral.
The comment in an internal email to Labour colleagues was made by John Mutton, in a debate over whether to lower the Union Flag to half-mast on Wednesday.
The email was sent in error to Conservative councillors. In it it said:
'Apparently, Birmingham have stated that they do not intend to fly the flag at half-mast on the day of the funeral.
"My own view is that I would fly a flag with a happy smiling face on but I would like to know the views of colleagues.
"Would you please let me know your views, if you have any, by Monday at the latest.
The Deputy Leader of Coventry's Conservative Group, John Blundell has described the comments as being 'beneath contempt'.
Baroness Thatcher was honoured with a ceremonial funeral at St Paul's Cathedral in the presence of the Queen and dignitaries.
If there were protests, they certainly did not disrupt Baroness Thatcher's funeral nor sully what was indisputably a dignified farewell.
