Actor and director Richard Attenborough has said he is "delighted" that Leicester is in the running to be named UK City of Culture in 2017.
The city is one of four which has been shortlisted and will find out in November if it has won.
In a message to City Mayor Peter Soulsby, Lord Attenborough said: “I am utterly delighted that Leicester has been short listed.
“I remain passionately convinced as to the outstanding merits of the city’s bid and of their ability to deliver a uniquely dazzling year, commensurate with the thrilling opportunities that such an honour would confer.”
