Nelson Mandela's links to the Midlands are strengthened by the fact there is a park named after him in Leicester.
A memorial in the park carries a quote from Mandela spoken at the time of his trial in South Africa.
"During my lifetime I gave dedicated myself to the struggle of African people. I gave fought against White domination and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the ideal if a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities.
It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve. But if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die."
