Armed police rescued a man from a Black Country canal after he jumped in trying to escape police.

The man in question is now in police custody on suspicion of stealing a handbag from a woman at gun point.

The woman was grabbed from behind and threatened with what police believe was an imitation handgun, she was with her heavily pregnant daughter at the time.

The 27-year-old ran off with the handbag and police caught up with him as he tried to swim away in the canal.

The man is also being held on suspicion of attempted robbery as he is accused of punching a man several times and rummaging through his pockets before a passer-by intervened.
