Inmates from inside HMP Birmingham prison riot claim a full scale riot started earlier this morning because they couldn’t watch TV or go the gym.
The calls came from angry inmates inside the Winson Green facility – despite possession of phones inside a prison being a criminal offence.
Prisoners claim they have sets of keys and are moving between two different wings - N and P.
One said:
The guards have completely lost control.
The TV antenna has been broken and we have not been able to watch TV for a couple of days now.
It started with seven of them on the netting and it just escalated from there. Everything is getting smashed up though. The windows are being smashed up and fires have been set.
Another inmate from inside P Wing said the prisoners had sets of keys – taken from guards – and he claimed that everything had been “smashed up.
Another prisoner said lack of exercise was the biggest issue for prisoners and he claimed prisoners’ human rights have been breached.
He added:
People are going crazy because of it. They are breaching our human rights and the government needs to do something about it, they need to sort it out.
It’s a dangerous place at the moment. People are walking around with knives and G4S have no control.
In a statement POA, The Professional Trades Union for Prison, Correctional and Secure Psychiatric Workers, said:
No staff injuries have been reported and staff are currently monitoring the situation and awaiting national support, through mutual aid.

The call for action follows last week's riot at HMP Birmingham, which saw hundreds of inmates wreak havoc in the jail.
