Specially-trained prison security teams have been drafted in to deal with an incident at HMP Hewell. So-called Tornado squads, equipped to deal with riots, were sent to the jail near Redditch in Worcestershire. Trouble broke out on a prison wing about 7:30pm on Saturday.
We are currently managing an ongoing incident on a wing at HMP Hewell. A small number of prisoners are involved and there is no risk to the public. We are absolutely clear that offenders who behave in this way will be punished and face spending extra time behind bars.
It is understood the incident ended shortly after loud quickfire bangs, thought to be distraction bursts used by prison authorities, were heard at around midnight. Prison authorities are now back in full control of the affected wing.
A prison officer was taken to hospital with minor injuries following a riot at HMP Hewell.
