Katie Zaferes of the USA became the first woman to top the Super League Triathlon podium after winning the ‘triple mix’ in Jersey.
She was pushed all the way by 2012 Olympic champion Nicola Spirig, who is back racing again just four months after giving birth.
It is the first time the event has been staged on the island, and the first time women have featured in the forward-thinking series.
Zaferes finished 19 seconds clear of Spirig, with compatriot Summer Cook taking third, and another American, Kirsten Kasper, fourth.
Meanwhile, Great Britain’s Sophie Coldwell was sixth, and Commonwealth champion Jodie Stimpson eighth, on the first day.
Both men and women race the ‘eliminator’ format on Sunday before the overall winners of Super League Jersey are crowned.
