The winner of Jersey's Inspirational Woman Award 2018 has been announced as charity worker, Ruth Smith.

Ruth won the award after she introduced a daily food programme to a school in Kenya.

She was given the award in a ceremony this morning, announced by the Jersey Women's Refuge.

Five years after losing her husband, Ruth rented out her house in Jersey and completed a six-month placement at a school in St Clement, Kenya.

A few days into the placement, she noticed the children were lethargic by mid-morning and underfed. Ruth's response was to start a 'Porridge Programme', which she secured funding for within two days.

Ruth later opened her own school, paid for entirely by her own money, after other schools were oversubscribed.

For her selfless contribution, Ruth beat marathon-runner and fundraiser, Ana Goncalves and charity worker Jennifer Keene to the prize.

Once again we had an incredibly difficult task in identifying a winner, as there were so many wonderful nominations for amazing women. Ruth's story of the ways in which she has helped the children of Malindi is truly inspirational.
