Alderney celebrates Homecoming Day

Alderney residents are celebrating 73 years since they returned to the island after being evacuated

Alderney residents are celebrating 73 years since they returned to the island after being evacuated during the Second World War.

The island was under Nazi occupation and several camps were built on the land including SS Lager Sylt, which was the only Nazi concentration camp in Britain.

Alderney was then run as a communal farm for 2 years after the war, to help repair the island.

Homecoming Day events include readings at the harbour from students at St Anne's School, a church service, a prayer at the Evacuation Plaque, the Vin D'Honneur reception and a music concert by the Alderney Island Band at the Island Hall.
