Manhole covers have blown "25 feet in the air" in the middle of a busy road in Jersey.
Emergency Services attended the scene at Bagot Road just before midday, following reports of an explosion from local residents.
Representatives from Jersey Gas and the department of Growth, Housing and Environment (GHE) also attended to check for "further explosive atmospheres".
There are no reported injuries so far, but it is unclear what caused the explosion or what the mixture of gases were.
The road between Bagot Pub and Les Varines will remain closed this evening while GHE monitor the situation to trace a source.
People are being asked to avoid the area.
