Nurse criticises support on offer to help islanders with mental health problems quit smoking in Guernsey

Islanders with mental health problem aren't being given the support they need to quit smoking.

That's according to a UK based Nurse Consultant who visited the Princess Elizabeth Hospital for a meeting on Monday 21st January.

Mary Yates lead a session talking about tobacco, its link with physical and mental health and how to get help with cutting down or quitting.

People with mental health problems haven't had the access to the treatments that help smokers to quit. You can reduce your stress levels, you can reduce your anxiety levels and you can reduce your problem with low mood as well.

– Mary Yates, Nurse Consultant at the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust

Those with mental health conditions are more than twice as likely to smoke and kicking the habit can have a positive impact.

Smoking remains the major cause of early death and disease in Guernsey according to the States.
