Cardiff City footballer confirmed on missing plane off Alderney

A major search and rescue operation for a missing plane off the coast of Alderney has resumed.

Nothing was found in last night's search.

The light aircraft was thought to have 2 passengers on board, including footballer Emiliano Sala, when it disappeared from radar last night. It's thought to have been travelling from Nantes in France to Cardiff.

Guernsey police have now decided to suspended the search operations after hours of trying to find the plane.

John Fitzgerald from the Channel Islands Air Search team has said without protection he wouldn't expect anyone to survive more than one hour in the water.

Concern was initially raised when the Ports of Jersey lost communication with the aircraft yesterday evening.

At approx. 20:25hrs on the evening of Monday 21.01.19 both radio communication and radar contact between Jersey Air Traffic Control and the light aircraft was lost north-west of Guernsey. As a result, Jersey Air Traffic Control notified both Jersey and Guernsey Coastguard of the incident. This search is being coordinated by Guernsey authorities. Jersey Coastguard is providing support where required
