Two musk turtles were left at the GSPCA Animal Shelter in St Andrews, they are the first animals to be abandoned there in a decade.

The turtles were left without a note, not in an obvious area and in unsuitable conditions, according to the GSPCA.

They help over 3000 animals every year, and say that it is rare animals will be left without any information.

In the last few days we have helped many animals including a selection of reptiles.

Last month we had a stray musk turtle found near the Ville Au Roi which takes the numbers of musk turtles to 12 now at the GSPCA.

We have seen a real rise in these pets being given up and found as strays which is a real worry.

– Yvonne Chauvel, Senior Animal Care Assistant

The GSPCA helps animals in need and is there for owners who have to part with their pets regardless of the circumstances.

The rise in unwanted musk turtles seems to increase each year and we would urge anyone looking for a musk turtle as a pet to be properly prepared and to come to the GSPCA.

The team have called the two musk turtles Melanie and Monica.

Last month we helped a stray musk turtle form Ville Au Roi which we have called Billy No Mates.

– Steve Byrne, GSPCA Manager
