Last year there were 90 serious accidents in the workplace that needed investigation in Jersey, according to the island's Health and Safety at Work Inspectorate.

The latest annual report showed that 90 percent of inspections carried out were related to construction or the removal of asbestos.

Five of the cases were so serious, they were brought to the Royal Court for breach of health and safety legislation.

Despite this, the Director of Health and Safety Tammy Fage, said she was pleased that 2018 saw the lowest recorded number of claims for short-term incapacity benefit due to work-related accidents.

It is clear, however, that there is still room for significant improvement in reducing these figures further, particularly within the construction industry which remains the sector where employees are most likely to suffer an accident or ill health at work.
