Drawing crowds of up to 25,000 people, Jersey's Battle of Flowers is one of the most popular annual events in the Channel Islands calendar. However, in the run-up to this year's Grand Parade the weather is likely to play a leading role in the day for all the wrong reasons.

While today has brought warm sunshine across the islands, our forecast is set to change dramatically over the next 24 hours with heavy rain, very strong winds and even thunderstorms possible. While the wet weather is likely to affect the floats on Thursday morning, Friday's Moonlight Parade is even more at risk as wind speeds pick up into the weekend.

The full forecast:

Thursday: Grand Day Parade Events 1.45pm - 7pm After a warm and humid night, low cloud will shroud the islands with outbreaks of rain set to arrive by rush hour. This will be heavy and even perhaps thundery. The rain will tend to ease around lunchtime so the main parade will be largely dry, and there is even a chance of some brightness later in the afternoon.

Thursday Evening: Some mist or hill fog patches are likely into the evening ahead of our next low pressure system. There is warm air tied in with this, making it increasingly humid. Heavy rain with the chance of thundery downpours overnight.

Friday: Moonlight Parade Events 7.30pm - 10.45pm By Friday, the bulk of this rain will be clearing and the day will quickly brighten once any straggling thundery showers have rattled through. Thereafter, a day of sunny periods and scattered showers. However, most notable is the increasing wind speed on the southern flank of the low pressure - threatening both Jersey's Moonlight Parade and those hoping to travel on Friday evening. By the overnight period, gales are likely in the shipping area, with F6 or F7 winds and gusts likely across the islands. After a warm and humid night, low cloud will shroud the islands with outbreaks of rain set to arrive by rush hour. This will be heavy and even perhaps thundery. The rain will tend to ease around lunchtime so the main parade will be largely dry, and there is even a chance of some brightness later in the afternoon.
