Channel Island runners raising money for those battling Australian fires

A charity run has taken place in Jersey and Guernsey to raise money for those affected by the Australian bush fires.

The event has been put on to support the Australian Red Cross in order to help people from the devastation.

A half marathon run as well as a 5K took place today (Sunday 19th January) starting at La Fregate in St Helier.

A similar event was held in Guernsey yesterday from Pembroke Bay.

Islanders taking part in the Relief Run to help Australia, are being asked to donate $50 to the Relief Run website.

Fires have raged across the country, with one former Jersey resident, who now lives in New South Wales, saying 'It's like the end of the world'.

The death toll currently stands at 28 people, however fire crews battling the flames say they have been able to turn from defence to offence for the first time in weeks, thanks to a break in the weather.
