The final report on the plane crash which killed footballer Emiliano Sala will be published later this year.

The Air Accident Investigations Branch (AAIB) says its investigations are at an 'advanced stage', saying it intends to publish its findings by the end of March.

It comes a year after the plane, carrying the Cardiff City striker and pilot David Ibbotson, went down off the coast of Alderney.

Extensive searches for the plane followed in the waters north of Guernsey.

Chief Inspector Crispin Orr says the AAIB sent their thoughts to both families.

Today marks the anniversary of the accident involving Piper PA-46-310P Malibu, N264DB, near Guernsey, and our thoughts are with the families and friends of Mr Ibbotson and Mr Sala at this time.

The Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) has conducted a thorough investigation looking at a number of elements including operational, technical, organisational and human factors that may have caused or contributed to this accident. We have worked closely with many specialist organisations including the aircraft and engine manufacturers and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) in the USA.

Our investigation is now at an advanced stage and we intend to publish our final report by the end of March 2020."

The body of Emiliano Sala was recovered from the wreckage of the plane in February 2019. Investigators said his body was exposed to harmful levels of carbon monoxide and that David Ibbotson, though his body was never found, was also likely to have been affected.

The Argentine striker signed for Cardiff City from French club Nantes for £15 million on 18 January.
