January is one of the busiest times of the year for Guernsey’s and Jersey’s citizens advice bureaus.
Guernsey’s Citizens Advice say the first three months of 2019 was the busiest for them and Jersey’s Citizens Advice got the highest number of debt inquiries last February.
The average amount of money owed by people getting help from Citizens Advice Jersey - excluding mortgages - is around £1,750. That is a rise of more than 30% compared to the previous year.
People may struggle with their finances after being paid early in December, having to make finances stretch for longer. Unexpected costs can often tip stretched finances over the edge. Bills from Christmas start arriving and people realise they have overspent.
