Cameron Elliott: How giving up steroids gave me a new way of life

Long lasting physical damage and suicidal thoughts - those were the shocking side effects one Jerseyman was left with after taking performance enhancing drugs.

Cameron Elliott first started taking steroids at the age of 16, after experiencing bullying and insecurities for being "the skinny lad at school".

I was 16-17 was when I first took steroids. I took them for 20 weeks and gained over a stone.

I definitely felt more confident off them and I definitely felt more energetic.

It was a high that really nothing can really match it out of experience so far.

But that initial high quickly turned into a huge low when he collapsed while out with friends and was taken to intensive care. He had no recollection of how he got there, and decided something needed to change.

When I got out, I experienced a low like I’d never experienced before. I felt like I was hit like a bus, had no energy and felt really suicidal.

He has also got to travel to Bangkok for breast surgery, because of the female breast tissue that he has developed due to an increase of oestrogen in his body.

It's definitely makes me feel like I’ve made a massive mistake, but at the same time its lessons that will be with be for life.

He now has two children, and has opened a business.

Since quitting, his life has completely changed. He now has two children, and has opened a business. He says he would not be where he is today if he was still using.
