Jersey Friends of Anthony Nolan are marking their 26th anniversary by asking islanders to make 2020 their year to join the donor register.

The charity raises money to help the work of the Anthony Nolan Trust which encourages young people to sign up to become bone marrow donors.

Every 14 minutes, someone is diagnosed with blood cancer such as leukaemia in the Brisith Isles. For many, a bone marrow or blood stem cell transplant is their only chance.

They need cells from a healthy person – with the same tissue type – to replace and repair their own damaged cells.

About 30% of people in need can find a suitable donor in their family. But the other 70% rely on a stranger to save their lives.

We are overwhelmed by the support people showed for the Jersey Friends in our 25th Anniversary year. But, we cannot stress enough that this is an ongoing process and, as more people are diagnosed with blood cancers who need transplants, so we need more donors on the Register.

– Kate Baigent, Donor Recruitment for the Jersey Friends

It's as simple as giving blood but it's life changing for the patient. It's not as if you're losing anything that your body can't replace. I felt fine before, during and after the process. In fact, I didn't feel a thing!

The medical staff are incredible, the process is so straightforward, and what you've given - your stem cells - are replaced by your own body in just a few days.

And the result? It would seem that - through my donation - I've actually saved someone's life. I can't describe how humble it makes me feel - for something that was actually so easy. I want to tell everyone about it and tell people to just get it done!

The Charity's motto is: 'Be a Match, Save a Life' - and it's true. So please, get on the Register now, because you might be the next person from Jersey who could save someone's life.
