Teenager and woman, 21, arrested in canal body investigation

A 14-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of murder after the body of a man was found in a canal in Manchester city centre.

Police were called to Canal Street where they made the discovery on Saturday afternoon.

A post-mortem examination confirmed the cause of death of Simon Brass, 40, of Salford, as drowning, although there were no injuries to his body.

The teenager is being questioned in custody as inquiries are ongoing.

Chief Superintendent Russ Jackson said: "As a result of information received from the community, we have made this arrest.

"However, we are still eager to talk to anyone who may have information as to what led up to the discovery of the man's body."

A second person has been arrested on suspicion of murder after the body of a man was found in a canal.

A 21-year-old woman is being questioned by detectives along with a 14-year-old boy who was arrested on Wednesday.

Police were called to Canal Street in Manchester city centre where they made the discovery on Saturday afternoon.

A post-mortem examination confirmed 40-year-old Simon Brass, of Salford, had drowned, although there were no injuries to his body. It is understood Mr Brass may have been pushed into the water.

Greater Manchester Police said inquiries are ongoing.
