Former Wigan Warriors rugby league star Sam Tomkins has made his debut in Australia's National Rugby League.

He set up two tries for the New Zealand Warriors in their match at Parramatta Eels but his new club were still defeated by 36 points to 16.

Australian commentators seemed impressed with his first outing, putting Warriors' second try down to 'a touch of class from Sam Tomkins.'

But there was frustration too as Tomkins spilled a high kick under pressure, which led to a Parramatta try.

Warriors coach Matt Elliott said: "It was a difficult night for Sam.

"But his best contribution is going forward and unfortunately the whole team didn't do enough of the things we had prepared during the week."
