A man has died after falling from a bridge on the M62 Motorway.
Emergency services and Highways England have confirmed they were dealing with a fatal road traffic incident between Junctions six and seven of the M62 in St Helens this morning.
Merseyside Police said it received a number of calls from a number of concerned motorists at 9.45am to report that a man was lying in the westbound carriageway underneath a bridge.
Officers from Merseyside Police and the North West Motorway Patrol Group were deployed along with paramedics and on arrival the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
A significant length of the west-bound carriageway was closed off as were a number of A-roads leading onto the motorway from the surrounding area such as Watkinson Way in Widnes (Cheshire) and Hall Lane in the Cronton / Rainhill area (Merseyside).
Police have said that investigation work is being carried out to establish the full circumstances around how the man came to be in the carriageway underneath the bridge.
