Police have sealed off a street in Cheetham Hill after a woman was punched in the face then raped.
Officers have cordoned off Chatley Street, at the junction of Cheetham Hill Road, close to the back of a Ladbrokes bookmakers.
It is believed police have been at the scene since 4am this morning.
Forensics officers are currently combing the area for evidence.
A Greater Manchester Police spokesman has confirmed a woman has been assaulted and they were investigating.
No further details of the incident have yet been released.
A warehouse worker in the area said:
Police have been there since 4am this morning. It’s all at the top of the street, they are taking photos, they have got masks on and it is all cordoned off.
The culprit is said to be in his mid 40s, around 5ft 8 inches tall, of medium build with dark hair and a full beard.
He was said to be wearing a brown jacket and dark coloured pants and was driving a dark coloured car.
An investigation was launched and detectives are now appealing for witnesses.
Police say they were called to the junction with Chatley Street at around 4am after reports a woman has been assaulted.
They discovered a 51 year-old woman who is believed to have been approached by a man, who punched her in the face before raping her.
There’s a parade of shops on Cheetham Hill Road but the area is mainly made up of industrial units, most of which were shut at the time.
One nearby office workers says:
The tape was still up when I got here about 7 this morning. There was one van and officers stopping people. The officers wouldn’t tell us what had happened but you could tell it’s pretty serious.
Two plain clothes officers carrying notepads made brief visit earlier however it’s understood investigations at scene are complete for now.
