A jealous husband beat up a love rival who he found naked in bed with his wife.
Army veteran Daniel Woods, 30, ‘saw red’ when he spotted Innes McDonald’s car parked on the driveway of his estranged wife’s home in Stretford.
He had returned early from a trip with the couple’s young children and immediately sent a Facebook post to his wife Danielle’s new partner which said ‘dead man’ and knocked on the front door.
Danielle, who recognised the message was from her husband, went downstairs to answer the door and ask why he had brought their children home early.
Furious Woods demanded to know why the car was on the driveway but Mrs Woods replied:
It doesn’t matter. Why are you here?
Woods then ran down the side of the house and into the property through a back door, ran upstairs and threw open the bedroom door to find Mr McDonald naked in bed, prosecutor Tess Kenyon told Manchester and Salford Magistrates’ Court.
He jumped onto the bed while Mr McDonald ‘curled up’ in a ball to protect himself.
Woods pinned the his victim down using his knees and launched into a savage beating.
Shouting furiously, Woods ‘repeatedly’ rained punches down onto Mr McDonald, who says he begged him to get off.
I was terrified. I didn’t know what to do. I was unable to defend myself.
Woods took his victim’s mobile phone and smashed him over the head with it, sending blood trickling onto his face.
Then Woods told Mr McDonald to ‘get out and f**k off’. As Mr McDonald walked to the top of the stairs, he said he felt a hand on his back and he slipped and fell to the bottom of the stairs, the court heard.
His attacker refused to allow him to dress and threw him out of the house naked, telling him to ‘**** off’.
Still naked, he walked through the garden and up the drive. He was turned away from one nearby house, before managing to take refuge in another neighbour’s house where he said he ‘felt emotionally drained’.
Later he was hoisted into an ambulance on a spinal board and taken to hospital for treatment to cuts, grazes and a deep cut to the left side of his head.
The whole incident has left me shocked to the point I jump if a door suddenly bangs. I feel nervous about returning to Danni’s house. This has had an affect on our relationship. It was humiliating.
He said he had only been to the house a few times before the attack and had visited Mrs Woods the night before as ‘they knew the children were with their father’.
Jon Mail, defending, said his client accepted the prosecution’s case.Woods, although separated from his wife, had still maintained contact with her, he said.
He found the complainant naked in bed with his wife and he acted in this manner. It was totally unacceptable but he responded unfortunately with anger in the manner you have heard. He saw red.
In a surprising twist, Mr Mail said his client had reconciled with his wife - who was watching from the public gallery.
He is back in the matrimonial home and they are working on their relationship.
He said his client had served in Afghanistan in the army.
Woods, of Dalton Avenue, in Stretford, pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
District Judge Khalid Qureshi handed Woods a 20 week suspended prison sentence.
Woods was also handed 200 hours unpaid work, ordered to pay £300 compensation to his victim as well as prosecution costs of £85 and a £115 victim surcharge.
