Police investigate suspected 'acid attack' mugging in Southport
Police are investigating a possible acid attack after a man suffered burns to his face and eyes during a mugging.
The 49-year-old victim was kicked and punched by four youths who then threw an unknown corrosive substance in his face.
The youths, three males and a female aged 17-19, left on foot taking his mobile phone and wallet.
Police were called to the incident on Hawkshead Street in Southport, Merseyside at around 9.35pm last night.
Officers administered first aid to the victim before he was taken to hospital to be treated for burns to his face and eyes. His condition is described as stable.
Merseyside Police have launched an investigation and officers are carrying out forensic and house-to-house inquiries and checking local CCTV cameras.
Tests will be carried out on the corrosive substance thrown at the victim to find out what it was.
