Police investigating reports that a man tried to urge a schoolboy to get into his van are asking the public to check dashcam footage from the time.

Officers say the "suspicious circumstances" happened in St Helens on Thursday 13 December in the Gaskell Street/Sankey Street area, at around 8:20am.

The 11 year old was walking to school and says he was approached by a man travelling in a white transit van.

The man urged the child to get in before he ran off and reported the incident to his school, who contacted police.

Police say enquiries are on-going and anyone with information is asked to contact them.

Description of man:

  • white

  • in his mid-20s

  • facial stubble

  • wearing a grey hoodie

  • driving a white transit van

I would like to reassure the local community that these incidents will be fully investigated and although this must have been upsetting, the child did the right thing by running away and telling an adult.

Detective Inspector Steve Ball

There will be an increased police presence in this area at the end of the school day.
